EMCA: European Master in Consumer Affairs (Market, Business, Law and Policies)
The European Master in Consumer Affairs (EMCA)
offers graduates and professionals alike, a unique opportunity to develop the
skills and knowledge needed to enhance their chances of employment and career
progression.
The
protection of consumers is now at the heart of European consumer policy. With
490 million consumers in Europe and their
expenditure representing over half of the EU's Gross Domestic Product (GDP),
consumers have been described as the lifeblood of the economy.
Confident consumers are therefore
an essential building block of the market to ensure continuing economic
prosperity. Consumer focus is no longer a gimmick and businesses need to cater
for satisfied consumers. This takes skills and knowledge.
In the report on "the need for postgraduate education in Consumer Affairs
in the European Union" (2005), the European Commission identified a gap between
current provision and labour market demand. The report noted a lack of higher
education graduates specially trained in European Consumer Affairs and strong
employment prospects for those graduates who have specialist knowledge.
The
EMCA has received the financial backing of the European Commission DG Health
& Consumer to develop such a course and train a new generation of highly
skilled individuals.
